Reasons for the Campaign
Local residents and businesses
oppose the plans of the Environment Agency to flood the Cuckmere Valley.
The risks being:
- Will lead to the collapse of the
sea wall which protects the Coastguard Cottages, endangering their
future
- Many years of mud until salt marsh
develops and this will only occur at the fringes leaving vast areas of
mud flats
- Flood risk could be increased
for towns such as Alfriston and Littlington
- The A259 would also be at greater risk of flooding
and could be undermined by the meanders
- Removal of habitat for the many
creatures including badgers that inhabit the valley
- Loss of the beach on the
east of the river once the river is reverted to its original course next
to the Seven Sisters
- Loss of popular riverside footpaths
- Because mud is less attractive
than the grass downland scenery this would be damaging to local businesses
Our Campaign to date has raised awareness
of the Environment Agencys secretive plans with the local community.
We have been on local radio and TV, in the local and national
press. An evening of debate was arranged at the Golden Galleon
with the attendance of MPs and many concerned local people.
This valley could be turned from this (below left) to mud (below right).
